Another fantastic photo shoot! My 8th trip with Chuck Keim of Coastal Outfitters took place from June 10-20, 2007. Our group of seven photographers met June 8th on Kodiak Island and the next day explored the island by vehicle. The following morning we flew by floatplane to the 60 foot boat which was to be our home for the next 10 days. Weather was nice all ten days, not always the case in Alaska. We concentrated on bald eagles (esp. young in nests) and coastal brown bears (mating, nursing, clamming at low tide, play fighting) on this trip but we also photographed a number of other species including, red fox, wolf, sea lions, harbor seals, whales, black oystercatchers (including newly hatched young), harlequin ducks, black & white-winged scoters, barrow's goldeneye, merganser, glaucous-winged gulls (nesting), and black-legged kittiwake (nesting). Many images were made from the flat bottom skiff we use to explore the many coves and bays. We put in some long days not getting to bed until 11 or 12 most nights.
I mostly used my 500mm lens on this trip, but also found many uses for the 70-200mm lens as well as a wide angle for the spectacular scenery. I used up almost 300 gb of external hard drive space and recommend fast memory cards for this photo shoot as there was a lot of action esp. with flying birds.
