2012 Wild Horses of the Pryor Mountains

Join Mike on this custom 3 day tour for wild horse photography in the Pryor Mountains of Montana/Wyoming. The group size is limited to five participants. We base out of Lovell, Wyoming and drive into the mountains looking for the Pryor Mountain mustangs. This herd of horses is very special because of its Colonial Spanish American heritage. This tough little horse, derived from the horses of Portugal and Spain, has been present in this rugged mountain area for nearly 200 years. If lost, the herd cannot be restored; and so its biological viability, together with its history, must be preserved. The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range was established in September of 1968 and is the first public wild horse range established in the United States. Today it covers over 38,000 acres of land. The PMWHR straddles the Montana-Wyoming border and covers Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management land, though the BLM oversees horse-related activities.

Michael Francis Photography is permitted by the Bureau of Land Management to conduct small group tours within the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range from January to December. His is one of a handful of businesses that have the federal permits necessary to guide clients onto this federal property.

The horses can be found year round but Michael is partial to the first weeks in July for the wild flowers. See his favorites. Other times of the year can also be productive and it is possible to travel with Mike to this location on “One on One” trips. A 4-wheel drive in this country is a must. Michael has seen mountain lion and black bear in the area as well as mule deer and bighorn sheep. If you have heart problems this may not be the trip for you as we will be above 8,000 feet.

Accommodations are basic in Lovell, and I will point you to my favorites but booking accommodations are your responsibility. Dining facilities are also limited in this area and clients will be expected to pack a lunch each day as well as pay for meals.

Contact Michael for more information. 406/245-4365 or email.
